In 2009, Senuru was in Lori Elridge’s 1st grade class in Melbourne Australia. Ms. Elridge is a writer herself and an enthusiastic supporter of her student’s compositions, posting their poems on her website. Along with his classmates, Senuru contributed many of his poems that year with topics ranging from the weather, to pets, to fairy tales. One of his crowing achievements was his light hearted tale of his adventure to see animals which he titled, “A train ride to the zoo”.
A year later, while scouring the internet for writings written by young people, Ben Shinabery stumbled across Senuru’s poem. Impressed by it’s carefree style and creative imagery, Ben asked to use the poem as lyrics. The reply came back a resounding “yes!” from Senuru and his father. Ben immediately sent the lyrics to his friends in the band Trains Across the Sea and twenty minutes later the song was complete. Two weeks after that, a video of the band performing the song live was sent to Senuru’s father and it quickly made the rounds to friends and family throughout Australia. It would be another four months before the song would get its day in a real recording studio, but finally in March of 2011 Trains Across the Sea went into the Jazz Academy to record the song with Andy Dodson.
lyrics
Well the train makes a chug chug chug sound
Wizzin through the station as its wheels go round
As the train's traction bars get more power
It gets faster every hour
Chifty Chufty Rattle and a Rap
Chuffing as its wheels go zap
We're chuffing through the mountains
Please so down
Now go faster we're chuffing through town
We're chuffing through (ahh!)
The creepiest places
Whizzing through a farm
Where a big pine tree
We stop for water on the way
We're going to the zoo
What a great big day
