about
In the spring of 2012, The Dick & Jane Project implemented a Central Ohio Call for Writings. Middle School students from all over central Ohio were invited to submit lyrics to The Project in hopes of them being chosen to be transformed into song during The Project’s Summer Internship program. Janie, a student at Olentangy Berkshire Middle School, collaborated with members of the Columbus band The DewDroppers through the first implementation of DJP LABS. During the process members of the band sent a video message to Jamie explaining their thoughts for the musical direction of the song. “When I was going through the lyrics I had a reggae…kind of ska punk feel to it” said band member Joe Brenneman. “I thought it would be ironic to have upbeat music to these lyrics because they are on the darker side…I think it makes a nice contrast”. Janie agreed with Joe, and next week the song was created.
lyrics
I saw you running around with her this summer,
her honey blonde hair billowing around her face.
I should have known you were a playa, boy.
You’re laughing and hugging and I want to cry.
What about the sweet memories of you and I?
I guess none of that matters now.
You made your choice.
But now it’s my turn to play this game.
Threw me away as if I was trash,
and now I’m about to get you back.
What if I shattered your dreams?
What if I let you rot in the snow?
What if I left you to die in the cold?
What if I let you go?
What if I did?
You make me so miserable and you flirt with me again,
Acting as if nothing ever happened.
Holding me close and telling me lies I’ve heard a thousand times,
you just tore me apart.
Yes, you did.
But now it’s my turn to play this game.
You threw me away as if I was trash,
and now I’m about to get you back.
What if I shattered your dreams?
What if I let you rot in the snow?
What if I left you to die in the cold?
What if I let you go?
What if I did?
Walking around without a thought in your head.
Kiss me hello before you hug her to bed.
I thought I knew the true you.
Do you really still love me?
I thought you said you’d never leave me.
What if I shattered your dreams?
What if I let you rot in the snow?
What if I left you to die in the cold, all alone?
What if I let you go?
What if I…
