about

When The Dick & Jane Project introduced Mary Lynn Gloeckle to her team of young lyricists, they first listened to songs that had an impact on each of them. Before long, Mary Lynn played John Lennon’s “Imagine”. Having never heard it, the students knew this was the type of song they were after. Basing their song on the terrorist attacks of September 11th, the three lyricists wrote a powerful set of lyrics, which Mary Lynn turned into exactly the song they were looking for.

lyrics

You tried to take me down
You took out my legs
You made me fall to the ground
You took the light away

but you didn’t know that I’d stand back up
and you didn’t know that i’d be stronger

You thought that you could bring us down
You thought that you could break us
but little did you know that we’d grow stronger
little did you know that we are strong

I tried to see the light
I tested out my legs
Above me was the moon
Brightening the dark
but I didn’t know how to stand back up
and I didn’t know how to be stronger

You thought that you could bring us down
You thought that you could break us
but little did you know that we’d grow stronger
little did you know that we are strong

Now I am standing up
and I can see the light.
You back away,
because I am growing as one
Now we are standing up
and we can see the light
You back away,
because we are growing as one

Na Na Na Na Na
We are growing as one.
