about
When Glenn Davis met up with Grizzell Middle school students Casey, Madjo, and Sarah to work on lyrics of their song with The Dick & Jane Project, the four began by analyzing themes in some of their favorite songs. Before long, they had their own ideas. “ I think it was Casey who came up with the idea of having it be a baby bird failing the first time and then taking off and soaring,” said Madjo. Following Glenn’s suggestion of writing and endlessly revising their words, they tried a few different songwriting techniques before hitting on one that worked best for everybody. “ We went off by ourselves and created lyrics for each different part of the song and came together and pulled lines that we liked,” explained Sarah. After a few more visits, the first draft of the lyrics were complete and Glenn made a rough demo of the structure of their song. When he returned with it the following week however, the young lyricists got very quiet. “ We really didn’t like the demo,” explains Casey. Though the basics of the song were there, the demo only consisted of Glenn’s voice and a guitar, without any of the trademark embellishments he is known for. Madjo wasn’t sure what to do and decided to ask The Project’s creator for advice. “ I went and I talked to Ben and he said in real life you have to be brutally honest. So I wrote a page (to Glenn)…I called his song hillbillyish….I was a little cruel but I gave him some constructive criticism and I like how it turned out. It was worth it.”
lyrics
I spread my wings to fly
but all they do is die
My brother already soars
Yet I’m behind closed doors
I look up into the sky
Everything seems so high
But if you don’t quit
It's your goal you'll get
But if you don't quit
Just like a baby bird who's falling
Your life it might be stalling
The bird will soon succeed
Just follow its lead
But if you don’t quit
It's your goal you'll get
But if you don't quit
I’ve been in pain as long as I remember
My whole life feels like December
I’m stuck inside a gloomy shell
up from down I couldn’t tell
To another world I’ve tried to venture
But I could not reach the happier center.
I push myself up to face another day
I see colors instead of seeing gray
I’m finally free of depression
Happiness is in my possession
A new start without delay
A lightness fills my heart today
But if you don’t quit
It's your goal you'll get
But if you don't quit
Just like a baby bird who’s bird falling
Your life it might be stalling
The bird will soon succeed
But if you don’t quit
It's your goal you'll get
But if you don't quit
