about

In 2010, when Ben Shinabery was experimenting with the transformation of young people’s lyrics into song, he asked his friend Rachel if she had saved any of the writings her children had written. Rachel gave Ben over twenty of her kids’ writings, in which he took to members of Trains Across the Sea during the first recording of DJP songs, known as Band Camp. The first recording of Ode to Mothers was completed then and served as a staple of the organization during it’s first year. In the summer of 2011, The Dick & Jane Project partnered with The Jazz Academy’s recording camp. Here, nine high school students learned the ropes of audio recording with Andrew Dodson. The camp culminated in the students recording of Ode to Mothers, performed by The DewDroppers. Each of the students mixed their own version of the song, and one of those mixes was ultimately used as the base for the final mix, engineered by Josh Landis.

lyrics

If I am a hand,
then you are a ring
that shines in the light.
If I am a hand,
then you are a glove
that keeps me warm in winter.

If I am a seed,
hen you are the dirt
that keeps me warm and safe.
If I am a seed,
then you are the water
that pours on me and keeps me growing.
