about

“I’ve always looked at songs as a way to express myself, and sometimes a way to tell people things that I can’t tell them by just talking,” says Jamie. Jamie is no stranger when it comes to songwriting. Able to play the clarinet, piano, and sing, she has been writing songs on her own for nearly four years. “I have a whole notebook of my fifth grade songs. They are…pretty terrible,” she said. However, Jamie stuck with it and the songs kept getting better. So in the spring of 2012 when her teachers told her about the open call for lyric submissions to The Dick & Jane Project, she had one ready to go. It was a song she had written the year before on a bored afternoon when inspiration suddenly struck. “I pulled out my notebook and just started writing this song. I looked at it at the end and was like, ‘ Hey, I kind of like this one’. So I performed it at the school talent show and a bunch of my friends were standing up and cheering…it went pretty well.” The band selected to transform these lyrics into song for The Project were Columbus band The Dewdroppers. Curious what they would do with it, Jamie chose not to tell them the melody she originally wrote. A few weeks later they e-mailed her the demo. “ My mouth was literally hanging open,” explains Jamie. The band got right to work recording the song with pianist Counterfeit Madison taking the lead. They even invited Jamie down to The Jazz Academy to see the process in action. “I got to see the vocals recorded which was so, so cool…one of the high points of my summer.”

lyrics

I’ve been hurt before.
There are scars on my heart.
I put all my faith in you,
praying you wouldn’t tear me apart.
You seemed different in every way.
You never ever ran from me.
You never played those stupid games.
It was easy to fall for you.

I think you knew
why I looked at you that way.
I tried to hide and make it go away.
I tried to stop and put on the brakes.
But my heart wasn’t listening.
You stopped my heart
and I couldn’t breathe.
And I was left wondering.
Do you feel it too?
Or is it just me?
Or maybe you and I are meant to be.

I tried to tell you before,
but I couldn’t find the words.
I was too afraid and always just let it go.
But I won’t hide it anymore.
No, it’s time for you to know.

I think you knew why
I looked at you that way.

It’s one of those moments.
You’re stuck and you’re frozen.
You want to laugh, but you want to cry,
so many feelings all at the same time.

I think you knew
why I looked at you that way.
I tried to hide and make it go away.
I tried to stop and put on the brakes.
But my heart wasn’t listening.
You stopped my heart and I couldn’t breathe.
And I was left wondering.
Do you feel it too?
Or is it just me?
Or maybe you and I are meant to be.
