In December of 2011 The Dick & Jane Project ran a workshop at Southmoor Middle School where 12 youth enrolled in After School All Stars were partnered with The Dick & Jane Project to write seven songs. After grouping themselves into songwriting teams, they met their band. When Columbus folk musician Johnny Newman sat down wit Alana, Destiney, Renee, and Anthony they initially had some difficulty concentrating on a direction. Johnny pulled aside Anthony and asked him why he couldn’t focus. Anthony said he was feeling sad, but wasn’t sure why. Johnny asked if Anthony could write about that. Anthony started writing and soon they had the first verse. Johnny returned next week and performed a demo of the verse, and the songwriting team really liked what they heard. Alana, who had told Johnny she doesn’t like sharing her thoughts, picked up a pen and wrote what would eventually become the bridge. Destiney was struggling with a close friend that had just moved away. She was talking to Alana about this and it wasn’t long before they were talking about crying. Destiney said to Alana, “ If you start crying I’ll cry even more”. The last line, and now the song, was complete.
lyrics
I don't know why but today
I just don't feel like doing anything
But today I just can't bare to do it anymore
I don't know why
but today I can't do anything for the rest of my life
I don't know why
But I'm so sad that you're not here
I don't know why
I just can't see you anymore
I don't know why
But today I can't do anything for the rest of my life
I don't know why
But now you are gone forever
I don't know why
You are angry at me forever
I don't know why
But today I can't do anything for the rest of my life
My mind is like an hourglass
Don't step on the broken window pane
that I lie listening to
To the broken glass the cries
for reasons I don't know why
And the hourglass is full of death
And if you start crying
I will cry even more
