In January of 2011, The Dick & Jane Project ran its debut workshop at Weinland Park Elementary where Alexzandria wrote a song celebrating her love for Ohio. Like many youth, Alex lives in the city where bus exhaust and ambulance sirens fill the space where birds and trees naturally should. Luckily for Alex and 140 others, Columbus has had The Godman Guild for over a century. Godman Guild owns the 167 acre Camp Mary Orton where every summer at-risk youth attend a camp that lets them explore nature, go rock climbing, swim, and breath the fresh air of nature. In June of 2011 The Project ran a workshop out at camp and Alex signed up immediately. Over a few hot weeks and many breaks to take a walk through the woods, Alex and six other youth completed their songs. When their families came out for the end of the summer picnic, they were treated to a live performance of these and Alex’s was a hit from the start.
lyrics
I love nature because of the beautiful colors.
I love nature because nature is pink.
I like the colors because of the green in the trees.
The colors are lovely just the way they are.
I love nature because of the beautiful sounds.
I love nature because the sounds are so funny.
I just think to myself, ”they’re magnificent.”
The birds chirp and sing ’cause that’s the way they are.
I feel the grass when I go hiking.
I feel the bugs when they bite me.
And the flowers they are colorful.
And the berries are juicy just the way they are.
The colors are lovely just the way they are.
The birds chirp and sing ’cause they way they are.
The berries are juicy just they way they are.
