Gabrielle, a second grader at Columbus Montessori Education Center, is an effervescent child with nearly bottomless energy. When he teamed up with Columbus band Blastronauts to write a song with The Dick & Jane Project, there were a few stories he needed to get off his chest. As he was describing these fictional events to the Blastronauts, it became clear they were going to need Gabe’s help to capture the true flavor of Gabe’s frustrations. They decided they needed to bring Gabe into the studio and have him record some background vocals to mix into the song, which you can hear throughout. Additionally, Gabe is a young person who has Asperger’s syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder that can effect social interaction and restricts his diversity of interest. Asperger’s syndrome effects anywhere from 2 to 6 out of every 1,000 young people. When Gabe was asked if he minded this fact was mentioned on the radio, he said he didn’t care and he’d be proud if people knew.
