about

Fair May is one of the original Dick & Jane Project songs. Ben Shinabery formulated the concept of The Dick & Jane Project in early 2010, based on the philosophy that there exists a unique power and perspective that lives within the written work of young people. Needing to prove this, Ben sought out writings created by young people and stumbled upon “Fair May”, which was originally discovered in a used book at Kafe Kerouac. The paper that the writing was written on was old and tattered, but the words of the poem were still legible. Ben photocopied the writing and included it in the writings to be transformed at Band Camp. Fair May (along with Life of a Tree and Ode to Mothers, the other two songs recorded at Band Camp) served as a staple of the organization during the first year of growth. In April 2011 the song was recorded at the Jazz Academy. It, along with A Train Ride to the Zoo, were the first Dick and Jane songs recorded in a studio. Fair May would go on to set the bar for musicians soon to be entering Dick & Jane Project’s programming.

lyrics

Fair May is here
With blossoms sweet and it strews them
Richly at our feet
So let us haste with smiles to greet

Fair May, Fair May

Bright month of May
Of promise rare to those who sow
With fervent prayer and early late
Who gladly wear this easy yoke
