about
The Columbus Ohio band This is My Suitcase is known for catchy pop hooks and captivating live performances, thanks in part to the bottomless energy of their front man Joseph Anthony Camerlengo. A veteran of The Dick & Jane Project, Joe teamed up with Dublin Grizzell Middle School students Danielle, Doug, and Sara to write a song for The Project. As it turns out, character traits that lend themselves to rock n’ roll translate well in the classroom. “Joe was awesome,” explains Danielle, “ He reminds me a lot of my friends because he has lots of energy and he’s always upbeat. There wasn’t one time that he came and said something bad or anything…he was so happy to be here and it was awesome. I loved working with him.” Having never written the lyrics for a song before, the students admitted that they were unsure if they would be able to complete their task , and whether their song would work out. “I didn’t think that we could do it, “ explained Sarah, “ I didn’t know what we would come up with. Like any big writing assignment, they started with a theme and an outline and went from there. “ We imagine the person kind of trapped inside their thoughts, and as the song goes on they finally saw who they were…kind of going from dark to light.”
lyrics
Lost inside the fog and doubt
in a world I don’t know
I’m scared that if I try and fail,
there’s only me to blame
Searching for the real me
Who am I? I am alone.
I find strengths within my fears
and courage in my pain...
Ohhh
When you’re lost you have to look for the light
When you believe in yourself, you’ll be alright
Times can be tough
But so can you
This is your chance
Just keep pushing through
Yeah, you are who you are,
The fog is clearing in my mind
and I’ll make it if I try
I’m scared that if I never try,
there’s only me to blame
Searching for the real me,
and I wonder who I’ll find
I find the light within myself,
and I’ll never be the same, Ohhh
Here I am. I’ve found myself
in a place I’ve always known
I made it here because I’ve tried
and look at all I’ve gained.
Searching for the real me
and oh look how I’ve grown
‘cause I am who I am
and I found I can’t be changed...Ohhh
*yeah you are who you are
