about

On the first day of The Dick & Jane Project’s workshop at Grizzell Middle School, Ben Shinabery read lyrics to hit songs. Without the catchy beats behind them, the truth was revealed. As Shy put it, “ When the songs only have 10 words in it, and its repeating the same thing, the only reason why I like those songs is because of the beat…the lyrics are pretty bad.” Shy, along with Ian and Molly, were partnered with folk musician Johnny Newman. Deciding to use both family and military themes, they soon found trouble picking the right words. “ For example the war scene, We had a bit of an argument on how to decide those words. Sometimes people felt like they didn’t sound right. Crashing, bashing, colliding…simple word changes like that,” explained Ian. Soon however, their song was complete and as veterans of the project they have sound advice for other young writers. “ Even if you think it is going to be really bad,” explains Shy, “ It’s probably going to be one of the best songs out there”. Molly was more direct, “ Argue. That is how the best songs come out.”

lyrics

I wake to the sound of the seagulls calling,
The sun is still below the mountain range
I hear the captain yelling orders
And the day I know is here again

The sun burns on my back and the sweat runs down my face
World marches on at the same pace
Yet my family’s in my mind the entire day
I think about the way we laughed and the smile on your face

And it makes me fight to stay
And it makes me fight to stay alive
My beauty in the black sky

Lenny is a man full of hopes and dreams,
and he shares each one with me.
Most are about his family,
where he would rather be.

His stories take me back to a better place,
even if its just for awhile.
And everyone smiles in spite of themselves,
in this time of darkness and need.

As sudden as a storm, smoke crashes down
and the ship is ablaze with gunfire.
The men beside me were brave and strong,
but no one saw them backing down.

It rages on, in total disarray,
while smoke continues to blind my way.
And the smoke drifts away,
and the ship burns as clear as day.

Fathers cooking steaks on the grill,
and grandma’s baking cookies in the kitchen,
my boys playing football in the field,
this was my family reunion.

The abyss of the night lets my memories flow
Although my sailor friends are in cheer,
My mind is like the sky itself,
With the stars burning bright in my mind.
